Stylus Speaks With: 2011 Rated Next Nominee DJ Scuffs
Nominated for the 2011 Stylus Rated Next DJ of the Year Award, DJ Scuffs is quickly taking over the city of Toronto. He recently started his own brand new weekly residency at Andy Pool Hall entitled WORD UP Wednesdays. This night is dedicated to an era where music was at its finest, New jack, 80’s & 90’s funk, hip-hop and soul. With his slick cuts, and extensive musicality he is sure to be a crowd favorite any venue. I had a chance to sit down and talk about his nomination for the 2011 Stylus Awards and find out what keeps this Toronto resident motivated.
1) How has Stylus changed or impacted you as a DJ/entrepreneur?
The Stylus Awards and events are great opportunities to network, push your brand name, meet new people, connect with existing relationships and build on new ideas to make the future of what we love to do, better. I greatly appreciate my nomination as Rated Next DJ Of The Year, and it’s recognition for the many years of work I have dedicated myself to my DJ career. I’m looking forward to this years awards and events, and I expect to gain experience, learn from my peers, build on relationships and better my brand. Stylus is nationwide recognition, and to be nominated for an award, it will take me to the next level I’m pushing for.
2) What inspires/motivates you?
You know those moments, when you drop those BIG tracks, and your crowd responds so loud, it’s louder than the music you’re playing.. that motivates me. DJ’s I grew up listening too, Canada’s own A-Trak, Toronto’s own Starting From Scratch, personal favorite DJ Jazzy Jeff.. they inspire me to be creative and original, and to stand out and rise above any expectations. I got a deep love and passion for music, that started in the early 90′s with Hip Hop and Michael Jackson.. my original inspiration to be a DJ. Oh, and I was a B-Boy, before I was a DJ!
3) What’s next for DJ Scuffs?
I’m working hard to build my brand as a DJ in Toronto, and across Canada. I’d like to guest DJ in Montreal and Vancouver too, so I’m working on making that happen this summer. I just launched a new residency, “Word Up Wednesdays” at Andy Poolhall (489 College St. West, Toronto), featuring guest DJ’s every week. I’m also pursuing another residency or two, on top of my guest DJ appearances in and around Toronto. A live mix show streaming from DJSCUFFS.com is also coming soon. I’m frequently releasing music online via Mixtapes, Podcasts, Remixes, Mash ups, ect. I’m working to collaborate with other DJ’s on events and music releases too.
I also co-founded SSTO Media, which is a multimedia services company, that offers DJ and event planning services, website design and development, graphic, logo and print design, photography, video editing and post production, and more, and we will be launching the new website very soon.
At the end of the day, I just want to DJ.
